When ever I have a chance, I love to bring some of my friends to fashion shows. It's always fun to see their faces light up with excitement as the lights come up and the first dress saunters down the runway. They get to see the glamour and the fun side.
They've never had to work till 3 am sewing last minute details onto a dress the day before a show. They didn't need to wake up early, fight for an interview, spend half your day on line in 6'' heels and not get home till after 1 am.... only to just START writing for tomorrow's publication.
No I simply reinforced the glamourous preconceived notion of what my life in fashion is like- celebrities, big designers, exclusive shows, champagne, etc. I don't mean to give them an unrealistic look into my day; however, they aren't working. Why should they have to deal with the hard/boring stuff?
Then they ask me about my discounts... what discounts?!?! Am I missing something? I've learned that just about everyone thinks I make a ton of money (I wish) and the designers just throw clothes at us (which aside from the occasional goody bag at a show, never happens. They don't need writers wearing their clothes, they need us writing about them).
So how do fashion journalists look haute? The same way you do. We invest in a few luxury pieces, test out trends at H&M and Forever 21, and search for amazing deals online.
One great website is
Coupon Cactus. They offer discounts at all my favorite stores, plus cash back. There's nothing like getting a check in the mail- more money to go shopping with!
I also love looking for fun new jewelry designers at Etsy.com. You want your accessories to be unique and stand out, why not try someone new?
Also use what you already love. Pair your favorite pair of jeans or little black dress with fun accessories to instantly update them. A pair of fun heels, a sexy purse, or edgy bangle can completely change the look of an outfit.
Lastly don't follow every trend. Dress for your body type, even if the look isn't on the cover of vogue. You can always incorporate the trend in little doses in a way that makes you feel good.
